Why Backlinks Are Important To The Internet Marketer

There was a time, when it was considered very desirable to make sure that your website offered visitors plenty of informational links to other information resources. Now, it’s exactly the opposite: it’s very desirable to have links back to your site.

A “backlink” is a link on someone else’s site that points to your site. It’s important for two reasons. First, it’s a path by which new traffic can find their way to your site. Second, it’s means for search engines to determine how “important” the content on your site is. The more “credible” backlinks to your site, the more important it’s content must be, and therefore the higher the search engine rankings.

Because backlinks are so important, it’s a good idea to cultivate the development of backlinks. A few ways to do this include:

• Develop partnerships with third-parties where you will link to them and they to you.

• Launch a PR campaign about your company or products that will result in some coverage in local newspapers or trade publications. Newspapers and publications often provide links to the authors or companies involved – these are very high quality backlinks.

• Create online articles that include a biography of you and a backlink. Use article distribution services to get the articles distributed around the web.

You get the idea. In general, get in the habit of cultivating backlinks in everything you do. It’ll pay off again and again in your internet marketing. Some links you work hard to get today may last for years.
